Spring Hill College – Murphy Fine Arts Center

,

project description

TAG undertook design and construction management duties in this project to respectfully reconfigure two existing historic buildings for their repurposing as Spring Hill College’s Fine Arts Department.

Design goals were to provide relatively level and logical circulation paths through the buildings; provide life safety and studio safety equipment, upgrade art studios and faculty offices with ventilation, plumbing and proper light; music studios and faculty offices with light and acoustics.

During construction, as a number of architectural features were uncovered – designs were changed to preserve and incorporate them. Original building windows instead of newly cut openings were used as passageways; exterior decorative brackets and eaves were exposed in a new interior stair and the upstairs gallery. Design with an industrial flavor combined with exposed historic elements result in an eclectic and artful facility respectful of Spring Hill College’s history and future.
